For many projects, no.
Michigan law lets someone who isn't a licensed architect or engineer prepare plans for a detached one- or two-family home of up to 3,500 square feet of living space (Michigan Compiled Laws 339.2012).
"Living space" means rooms you live, sleep, eat, or cook in. Garages, basements, attics, porches, decks, bathrooms, closets, and hallways don't count toward the 3,500.
That covers most additions, garages, decks, basement finishes, and remodels in West Michigan.
When you do need an architect or engineer: larger homes over that limit, apartment buildings, commercial buildings, and licensed adult foster care homes. If your project is outside the limit, or the building department asks for an engineer's review of a specific part, I'll tell you up front.
